STAFF SPOTLIGHT

hannah saale

ZOOKEEPER
MAMMALS NORTH

Hannah was born in China and was raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. She graduated from Palo Verde High School in 2020 and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in zoology, with a concentration in zoo and aquarium science and a minor in sociology, from Michigan State University in 2024. During her studies, Hannah gained valuable hands-on experience through an internship at Wilderness Trails Zoo in Michigan. She joined the Ellen Trout Zoo team in June of 2024 as the swing keeper for Mammals North and has since stepped into the role of primary big cats keeper, where she continues her work in the Mammals North area.

Favorite Animals: Jaguar, otter, spectacled owl, pretty much all of the animals I care for.

Favorite Holiday: Thanksgiving because of the food and family element (not a fan of the colonization aspect though).

Favorite Color: Black

Little Known Fact: I have a Made in China tattoo inspired by the shirt my grandmother gifted me after I was adopted and brought to America.

Who Inspired You?: My parents. Without them I'd be living in a ditch. I'm grateful for the opportunities they gave me.

Toughest Challenge: Working in the south... in the summer.

Favorite Memory: Visiting the Shedd Aquarium. I adore marine mammals and marine biology was my first love.

Best Quote: "Trust in the virtues within you and let your body tell the truth to embody charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent." - RuPaul

Best Advice for Those Wanting to Join the Zoo Field: All animal experiences are important. Be ready to hear the word no many times before finding the facility/institution that gives you the chance to begin your career and find your passion. It is all worth it.
